GodReflection: News Flash—We Inherited God’s DNA
For God so loved the world that he gave . . . John 3:16
In the sports world, an audible is a last second call that differs from the agreed upon play the athletes were about to execute.
My last post on the difficulty of forgiveness and the need we humans have on occasion to renew our determination to forgive again and again a specific offence or the same individual provoked a delightful exchange with an especially precious lady cousin.
Those cousin conversations stimulated additional thought.
Then at three o’clock in the morning it hit me. Sometimes the obvious isn’t always the obvious: Forgiveness is a gift. I can give it to friends and even to the unfriendly.
Thus, I’ve postpone a post on freewill and called an audible on my God wired capacity to give a gift.
The greatest gift I can give another human being is the gift of forgiveness. It is also the most valuable gift I could ever receive from others. It is perhaps the ultimate of all possible gifts. There are also times when I would do well to gift myself with forgiveness.
Once again, where does that innate ability to gift others originate?
Especially, to be even more specific how is it even possible for a human being to gift forgiveness?
I think about the traits of Holy God. To give is inherent in God’s DNA.
God gave us life. God gave us a globe on which we live. God gave us a vast universe that supplies light, climate, water and food to sustain His creation.
God gifts us with family and friends.
Moses testifies before all Israel, “You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed” (Joshua 23:14). God gives promises. To those who know Him his promises are gifts of greater things to come..
God gifted wisdom to those who seek.
God gifted His Son to the world. God gifted grace to sinful humanity. It is true God so loved the world that he gave.
The God of the universe gave me forgiveness. What if I attempt anew to see forgiveness for what it is—a gift.
It is as if I were to enter into God’s Holy Department Store.
In comparison, its riches and grandeur demote all world class five-star shopping points to nothing more than small corner stores with under stocked shelves.
Inside God’s store, I find myself on a strange errand. I look for the most exquisite item in His Mall. I seek the most outlandishly beautiful gift available. It is a gift for my enemy.
The brightly lit display shining from the center of the store draws my attention. I find exactly what I need. It is the perfect gift—it is forgiveness.
The gift department wraps it in Holy paper topped off with a band of white ribbon and a pure white bow. If I look at the ribbon in a certain way I see the shape of a cross.
I leave God’s store ready to grace my offender with heaven’s most perfect gift. The gift of forgiveness.
It is only possible to present such a gift because I inherited my Father’s DNA to give.
Stay tuned.
