GodReflection: God The Nurturer
You know him for he lives with you and will be in you (John 14:17).
The foundational presumption in this series of posts is that Holy God who created me provides my sustenance. My nutrition comes directly from Creator God. Therefore, I want to better understand the process of intake from the Holy.
One would think, with the prevalence of the virtual world we live it, we might grasp with greater ease the idea of Jesus’ provision for his spirit to reside within his followers. We should be open to the reality affirmed in Scripture that God lives inside Christ’s followers through the Holy Spirit.
We have the Holy essence of Father and Son on board, living within. He sustains the walk of all who are his disciples. I understand Jesus’ teaching about ‘on board nutrition’ to be explained by Luke, John and Paul.
When I declared my allegiance to Jesus through the grave of baptism (Acts 2:38), I came up from the water with a gift. I was provided with internal nurture. I was given the Holy Spirit who provides occupancy for both Father God and Jesus Son. That gives me access to eternal nutrition from the Godhead.
John tells me The Spirit gives life (John 6:23). The farther we proceed on our Jesus walk we too will one day realize the validity of Jesus instructions to his band of disciples: you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you (John 14:20).
Toward the end of his life John reflects again on that reality: This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit (1 John 4:13).
Paul helps me understand the value of the Holy presence within. When I am attune to my on-board guests little by little and step by step, they grow me with the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). That comes about as we live by the Spirit, and keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25).
How does portable nurture work? Here is my best attempt to put the concept into words:
I find the Holy residence serves as a compass for my soul. The magnetic north points to the Holy. My walk is never precisely aligned with Holy North. Yesterday, I may have been more on target than today. Hopefully, tomorrow I will be less distracted.
I can tap into portable nurture as long as my heart is surrendered to Jesus. As I go through my day vibes will connect my soul to my brain waves to announce opportunities to receive God’s nutrients. A piece of Scripture may stand out to meet a current need.
A certain book may appear on my radar to move me in a direction to be more receptive to a message God wants me to hear. At an unexpected moment I may find myself drawn into a conversation with Creator God. A service opportunity may appear that causes me to walk for a moment more in step with the heart of Jesus.
It is as if a Holy radar is in constant motion to cause me to see multiple nurture packs popping on and off the screen. Hopefully, I will grow in my desire to increase my intake of this grand supply of nurture that God supplies generously for my use.
It is a gift from God. The flow will only stop if I allow my heart to calcify and become hard. Hard hearts are resistant to The Holy.
I would love to hear how you have experienced portable nurture in your own life.
