GodReflection: Walk Toward the Quake
From where I stand, I observe two types of quakes. The first type of earthquake is tied to the sinful fall of humanity. This series doesn’t address these quakes. Throughout history we read and witness the evil connected to Satan’s destruction. From these quakes guaranteed protection is nonexistent.
The second type is the subject of these posts. It is the earthquake that comes for the purposes of the Holy. Over the past weeks we have looked at these stories in Scripture. These quakes are rare history changers. With them comes assurance that God has a message for His creation.
Holy quakes pulsate with God’s purposes. They highlight His omnipotent power. They also throb with the reassurance of God’s care and love.
The quakes rumble with His Holiness. They highlight the need for Holy protection and the guarantee of Holy presence.
We are promised that God will quake the earth once more in judgement and Holy restoration. That is not the subject of today’s post. I will look at that next time.
My interest today is to discover the assurance I have to stand within the safety of God’s hand when He quakes the earth.
Once again, the author of what we know as the letter to the Hebrews draws me into his sermon. Although not identical, I see similarities in the time I live with the time his audience faced. Let me explain.
Hebrew Christians were the first generation to live after the two angels spoke to the apostles at Jesus’ ascension.
“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).
Time moves forward and allowed age to advance on members of the Hebrew church. Seven decades flew by. Jesus had not yet returned. Each day brought the sunset of death closer. Would he come back? Can we still trust his promise?
Like many of the Hebrew Christians, I find the time near when I can mark seven decades since I first learned of the angelic promise “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” Can I still trust the promise?
The Hebrew sermon walks me through eleven chapters in my Bible as the speaker builds the case for trust placed in Jesus. He will indeed come to set all wrong and decay to right. The earth will shake and be purged. All disciples of Jesus will stand firm and protected as the earth quakes.
The climax of the sermon is recorded in Hebrews 12. There he uses the Mt. Sinai quake to clarify Jesus’ return and the security believers will have near the quake.
You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm . . . But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.
You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant.
At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”
Here is the lesson I need to hear from what I learned with the quake of crucifixion, and the quake of resurrection. I want to have the same trust in the Holy presence as was confirmed to Peter and to Paul when jails and a prayer meeting quaked.
I desire that same trust to be present as I wait the return of Jesus and prepare to witness God quake anew the earth and the heavens in Holy repair as His original design is restored.
Let’s join together and await in confidence Jesus return. Let’s remember it is by grace we await his return under the protection of his Holy Kingdom. Let us live with confidence and trust that when the earth and heavens shake kingdom dwellers will stand spirit-filled solid under the protection of King Jesus and Father God.
