GodReflection: What’s the Big Deal about God?
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:16
As far back as my memory takes me I’ve always believed in God. To believe is probably my only constant held in my understanding of God.
The wise man of Ecclesiastes wrote: He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11
Should he be right, it sounds as if God set a working compass in my soul with an original setting that points toward God-north.
Without a doubt my God belief was taught and enhanced by a multi-generational God believing family. I was immersed in belief 24/7 by family and church who—in the best sense of the expression—took God for granted.
I’ve mentioned before in this blog that next to church came camping and fishing in our family.
If I give credence to Paul’s observation in Romans 1:20 it should be enough for me to look around at the beauty and power of nature to create belief in God.
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. Romans 1:20
Whatever the factors—some that I understand and many that I don’t—here I stand as one who believes in God.
God is a big deal.
It is of eternal importance that I get Him right.
Not so much that I understand everything about Him—which isn’t possible since He is God—but rather that I gain a basic understanding of what His desire is for me and what His plan is for all humanity.
Here is what I do think:
If I get God right that places me ahead of the game when it comes to how I understand the seven foundation pieces I need to guide my walk.
To get God right aids in my quest to get both life and death right. To get God right helps me to understand the danger of Satan.
So now I have four of the seven road signs vital to the navigation of my trail from here to eternity.
The truth is the big deal about God is that only in Him do the other six road signs make sense.
Next time it’s another of the big seven. I look forward to thinking through the question. What’s the big deal about Jesus?
