This is my Task

GodReflection: Power Word Wednesday

garyguarujaLast night was one of those rare nights when I awoke and couldn’t go back to sleep.

Like an old Jukebox a golden oldie pop from the dusty stack in the recesses of my memory bank and began to play:

task1To love someone more dearly every day,
To help a wandering child to find his way,
To ponder o’er a noble thought and pray, And smile when evening falls, And smile when evening falls: This is my task.

To follow truth as blind men long for light,
To do my best from dawn of day till night,
To keep my heart fit for His holy sight,
And answer when He calls, And answer when he calls: This is my task.

And then my Savior by and by to meet,
When faith hath made her task on earth complete,
And lay my homage at the Master’s feet,
Within the jasper walls,Within the jasper walls: This crowns my task.

task2It reminds me that I have a task while I live upon the earth.

It is no less than to reflect Jesus.

Powered by the Holy Spirit my task is to love Jesus who reflects the Father. He set the bar high.

In fact, it is set heavenly high. I cannot reach it. I can only move in his direction.

Here is how the apostle Paul defined the task for those of the church in Galatia: For in Christ Jesus . . . . The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

How do I go about my primary task of allowing my faith to express itself through love?

task7Tasks are not a list of items to accomplish. Rather they are a manifestation of faith expressing itself through love.

Kingdom tasks naturally find expression as we grow closer and closer to Jesus.

That makes my task: to love, to forgive, to smile, to be generous, to gush grace, to walk by faith, to pray, to sing, to reflect joy, to listen, and to hurt with others.

It is my task: to offer bread, to carry a cup of cold water, to trust, to ponder, to be kind, to cultivate the heart of God, to worship, and to be an open and inviting door so that others can enter into kinship with Jesus.

task9To attempt to express my faith in Jesus through love is a worthy task—don’t you think? As Paul said: it is the only thing that counts.

Stay tuned.

  1. So well said, my dear brother, Gary……………..such that I printed it out and will use it to close my sermon this Sunday a.m., Lord willing.  I have spoken on “I Am the True Vine…Bear Fruit” (2/1), (had an unfortunate tragedy in the congregation so postponed repentance one week), “Bear Fruit Worthy of  Repentance” (2/15), and this Sunday “The Fruits of Your Righteousness”.  It will be a fitting wrap up, na minha humilde opiniao, to the concept of tasking as an outgrowth of the Spirit of God in us, Galatians 5.Thanks for all you do, my good man, to strengthen the kingdom, family, His army.Grace and Peace,Lynn

  2. This article goes to the heart of the matter. It’s the key to personal spiritual growth and church growth. It’s the key to stronger marriages, better families, and closer friends. It’s also the key to mission teams that survive and thrive.
